Whos That Flying - iPhone iPod Touch iPad

Most shoot ‘em ups out there can be categorized as either really deep and enjoyable or really shallow and repetitive. Very rarely do games in the genre fall somewhere in the middle. Developer Mediatonic, though, has managed to create a side-scrolling shooter that’s not exactly awesome but certainly deserves some merit. Who’s That Flying?!, previously released through PlayStation Minis/PC/XBLA, has found a new home on the iOS. This strangely captivating shoot ‘em up is full of charm, but its lack of originality and shallow gameplay keep it from being as great as it could be.

Description:
As the mysterious and powerful “Guardian of Earth” your steely eye and HYPER-POWERED LASER ARM have kept the citizens of Earth safe for generations (as well as proving a hit with the ladies).
With all your awesome TALENT and FLAIR, surely it would be IMPOSSIBLE for a devastating invasion of Doom Beasts to descend on your cities and cause havoc without your knowledge? (Even if you were MAYBE showboating for a magazine photo-shoot at the time…)
Now, you must not only defend your cities from the ravenous hordes of Doom Beasts – you must defend yourself against accusations of gross incompetence from the Galactic Council of Justice! And this is all BEFORE you can even start to get to the bottom of just who OR what is really behind the attacks…

Mix your music and experience an artistic adventure iPhone apps of the week

iPhone (Credit: CNET)
The big news this week from the world of Apple was the discovery that iPhones have been tracking users' locations as they go about their daily lives. Apparently, whenever you use Google Maps, or take a picture, or do anything that consults the GPS, your location and a time stamp are recorded in a log file on your iPhone. Apple is not using this information for anything, but it's not surprising many people find this particular previously unknown feature pretty unsettling.

Final Fantasy III (iPhone and iPod touch)

Two decades later and Final Fantasy is still kickin’.
Despite years of progress passing it by and countless sequels offering more sophisticated gameplay, this simple adventure remains appealing due to the purity of its gameplay. No other role-playing game embodies the old-skool style more than Final Fantasy and that alone makes it worthy of consideration.

Description:
First released in 1990, Final Fantasy III was the first title in the Final Fantasy series to become a million-seller, establishing once and for all that Square Enix’s classic RPG saga was here to stay.
The full 3D remake released in 2006 duplicated the original’s success, selling over a million copies worldwide.

Final Fantasy III was a hallmark of innovation for the entire series, from the job system that lets characters change classes at any time to the ability to summon powerful creatures such as Shiva and Bahamut.
When darkness falls and the land is robbed of light, four youths are chosen by the crystals to set forth on a journey to save the world.

3D sound and 3D snowboarding: iPhone apps of the week

(Credit: CNET)
iPhoneA couple of days ago, some long-awaited iPhone hardware news finally hit the Web. No, it's not the iPhone 5 (which some are saying won't be released until fall). The big news out this week is that the white iPhone 4 will finally become available as soon as by the end of this month.

I have to admit that the white iPhone 4 looks pretty cool, but I can't imagine anyone waiting to take the plunge to buy an iPhone based on the color of the device. Is it just me? If anyone reading this has been waiting for the white iPhone 4, let us know in the comments.

World of Goo oozes onto iPhones

Back in January, celebrated indie game World of Goo made its iPad debut, leaving iPhone and iPod users everywhere to cry, "Where's my Goo?"

It has arrived. World of Goo is now available for iPhone (and third- and fourth-gen iPod Touch), and it's every bit as good as its tablet predecessor--just a little smaller.

As I explained in my original review, the World of Goo is populated by Goo Balls--cute, squealing little blobs of, well, something. In each level, it's your job to guide them to a specific destination: up a tube, across a bridge, and so on.

The Goo Balls themselves become part of whatever structure you have to build, but if you use too many of them, you won't accomplish your collection goal.

Max and the Magic Marker (hands-on)

Remember the children's classic "Harold and the Purple Crayon"? Imagine, if you will, that Harold had an older brother: Max, an equally artistic scamp with a Conan O'Brien haircut--and a magic marker.

So the stage is set for Max and the Magic Marker ($1.99 for iPhone/iPod, $4.99 for iPad), an inventive, entertaining iOS port of the eponymous PC/Wii game.

MMM is a 2D platformer with a twist: Like Harold, Max can draw objects in the world around him and then use and/or interact with them. For example, when standing on one end of a see-saw, he can draw a giant boulder to drop on the either side and vault him up to the next platform.

The iPhone 4G Steering Wheel with Speakers (hands-on)

Fact: developers have whipped up some mighty fine racing games for the iPhone. Off the top of my head, I'm thinking Asphalt 5, Driver, Need for Speed Hot Pursuit, and Reckless Racing, to name just a few.
However, these games share a common obstacle: controls. Either you're futzing with onscreen buttons that offer no feedback, or you're "steering" the iPhone itself--which I find too small to grip comfortably.
Enter the iPhone 4G Steering Wheel with Speakers, a slick little accessory that wraps, well, a steering wheel around your phone.

Cool Facts To Know About IPhone Games And Applications

By: T Dub Jackson

As touch screen technology has developed and become more popular, iPhone games have taken advantage of the opportunity to appeal to those who enjoy their phone's ability to function as a portable game console. These games range in theme so drastically that almost anyone's taste in applications can be matched. There is plenty to choose from, including new, portable incarnations of old titles, and brand new technology unique to the iPhone's built-in touch screen, mic, and camera.

There is something for everyone to enjoy amongst the thousands of applications currently available to iPhone users. The games cross multiple genres and varieties, including teaching games for children, arcade shooter, adventure, puzzles, and even augmented reality. Free demo's are released through 'Lite' versions of applications to give users a playable example before purchasing the full version.

Due to the portable nature of the iPhone and its touch-screen method of control, it makes a great platform for revived arcade games. The classics can all be found with their original graphic in the iPhone store, with the innovation of touch controls to make play accessible. For example, a digital joystick image may float at the bottom corner of the screen where players can place their thumb to move characters around.

Those who like to create something new and original will find a great store front in the application directories. Original programs can be coded on one's computer with supported program files, and upon completion, can be sold to the masses. This is a great way to get publicity as a game developer, or creative storyteller of any kind, by exposing iPhone users to one's very own home-made games.

Interactive technology has become one of the largest developments in gaming over recent years, and iPhone games have begun to take advantage of its newest designs. Mic interaction is available in many forms, such as voice synthesizers and music creation games that let the player orchestrate their own tracks by editing real recorded audio. Voice commands can also be used in some games, where players can talk to characters to give them commands.

Applications that interact through a user's camera are typically called Augmented Reality, due to their ability to add images into a live stream of real footage. Depending on the application, certain factors in real life are recognized as something that program can interact with, and it may stick a marker or animation on screen to display its recognitions. Players can then use the touch screen to alter the world through the screen, and change floating markers to different animations, such as a moustache on someone's face.

Creativity and technology keep expending the library of iPhone games at a rate which no one could play every game completely in their lifetime. Those whose interest lies in classical gaming can now play their favourites anywhere in the world, while waiting for an appointment, or even riding the bus. Augmented reality and sound effect games are also giving user a new way to look at their world, and to inspire them to have more fun with their surroundings.
